The wreckage of a plane that went missing in forestland west of Coffs Harbour has sadly been found on Saturday.

The Mooney M20 four-seater plane dropped off the Air Traffic Control Radar around 7:30am on Friday morning after departing Murwillumbah Airport.

Police located the wreckage today after trekking to the crash site about 25km west of Coffs Harbour in the Dorrigo National Park.

Sadly initial reports are that the pair are believed to be a Gold Coast father and son. Police are yet to formally identify the bodies of the men on board.
